Agriculture is the passion of this district on the slopes of Mauna Loa, where
Kona coffee responds best to the localized climate and mineral rich rocky soils and
joins with ranching, boutique herb, vegetable and flower farms, macadamia nut
orchards and avocado exotic fruit plantings to delight the eco tourist. Harvest
in the upland ‘coffee belt’ generates a popular international Kona
Coffee Cultural Festival each November.
Down along the rocky shoreline are many interesting historic sites, including
the beautiful Honaunau National Park and Kealakekua Bay, where British explorer
Captain James Cook first landed in Hawaii.
The rural settings of South Kona’s small communities, along the highway
heading to Volcano, offer farm, estate and retreat properties away from the bustle
of resort life.
